[net.micro.mac] Manx 1.06H shipped with "Deadly System"

jer@peora.UUCP (J. Eric Roskos) (06/05/86)

Two days ago, I received my new copy of the Manx compiler update for
version 1.06H. I read the manual before installing it, and was pleased to
read that the new version was shipped with system 3.1.1 on it. (Release
Document, page 2: "This is due in large part to the System file obtained
from Apple which is version 3.1.1 ...") I was pleased to find this because
I presently only had version 3.1.

So, I spent half an hour moving all my DA's and fonts to the Manx system
file, and rebooted the system... only to find that it had system 3.0,
the so-called "deadly system".

Well, sure enough, it did turn out to be a deadly system. While trying to
restore my old system from backup, it insisted first that I unlock the
disk ("Unlock disk?" it said in an innocuous manner), then announced that
the disk needed "minor repairs". The repairs went OK, it seemed, but after
copying the backup system onto my hard disk, it wouldn't boot! Fortunately
I had another copy of the 3.1 system, albeit with none of my DA's and
stuff, which I used to reboot. However, the backup disk still needed
"minor repairs," and this time I got a "bomb" error everytime it tried to
make the repairs. An hour later, everything is restored back to normal,
but it's an hour and a half (altogether) that would have been better spent
installing the new compiler.

The moral of this story being... don't believe the Manx release documents
for 1.06H. It's system 3.0 on there.

Cricket Graph also comes on System 3.0/Finder 5.1. I moved the old
system onto it after trying to make a backup copy (which they recommend)
and have the system bomb - several times. You'd think the Finder
could at least copy a disk...
