This a fond farewell to all of you that made up net.micro.mac and info-mac the last two years. I've learned a great deal here, and hope I helped some of you out when possible. The reason for my pending absence is simple: I am going as a foreign exchange student to study in Goettingen, Germany for a year. Georg-August Universitaet in Goettingen is very well known for most subjects *except* Computer Science, and to my knowledge they don't have much (if any) of a facility there. Hence, I will be cut out of the telecommunications world. [I have a double major of Computer Science/German Literature, doing my CS here at UCSD and most of my German there] As always, I am happy to answer any questions or fulfill requests sent to me if possible. From 15 June until 31 July I will be at: 101 East 7th Street Davis, CA 95616 (916) 756-7667 (_anytime_, voice) After 4 August I can be reached at: Chris Borton c/o EAP Study Center Georg-August Universitaet Wilhemstrasse 4 D-3400 Goettingen, West Germany Thank you to all for providing a wonderful medium for discussion and sharing of information. The Mac is indeed wonderful...Chuq, Ephraim, Werner, Darin, Larry, and all other wonderful information sources--keep up the great work! Didn't he respond to just about anything and everything posted?? >Thank you to all for providing a wonderful medium for discussion and sharing >of information. The Mac is indeed wonderful...Chuq, Ephraim, Werner, Darin, >Larry, and all other wonderful information sources--keep up the great work! Let me share a few interesting points about Mr. Borton that might make this dark day in net.history a little bit easier to swallow: Chris (or Johann as he prefers) has this thing about his Mac. You might call him a "purist" but that still might be too weak. Don't ever get him started talking about the Mac. On the phone, via E-mail, or in person (especially within 10 feet of his bedroom--where Mr. Mac lives...). Have I mentioned that Johann is a Mac FANATIC? No? Well, lemme give you a few clues: Johann has to be double-clicked before he even thinks about launching out of bed. He has to be dragged everywhere. When he is busy, he makes himself available as a DA that NEVER goes away. (Not even in MacDraw) You exit the borton application by clicking on "bedtime for Borton..." in the "Daily" menu and clicking "yes" at the "Save today's changes?" dialog. (Be sure to save the 1-meg ramdisk. And don't forget about any Johann DA's left open in Switcher...) Utterance of the words "Lotus" or "I-B-M" are not tolerated. Ever. Johann's event loop consists of: PreachMac PostNetMicroMacArticle ExecVollyball PreachMac ExecScuba PreachMac ExecViola Chris (I mean Johann) has this system: Mac, New ROMS, 2 Megs of memory, image-writer, Apple 1200baud modem, 20 Megs of hard disk. (with about 400K free for breathing.) But poor old Johann has but one 400K drive. During his stint in Germany, he will be without many things. His stereo, and (god forbid) his CD player will be sitting in Davis all alone. So, in honor of Johann's leaving, I have organized the "Save-Johann-in-Germany" fund. The fund accepts: 1) Chocolate 7) P.D.Q. Bach Albums 2) Classical CD's. 8) Viola Music 3) Rush CD's. 9) Chocolate 4) 800K disk drives. a) A Unix Box 5) A portable CD player b) A car 6) An "I {heart} sdcc3" c) Chocolate tee-shirt. Donations to the "Save-Johann-in-Germany" fund may be mailed directly to the University. Perhaps our saving grace here is that Johann will still be available in Davis, California this summer...probably "cow-tipping" as they are known in Davis for inventing the sport. :-) I suggest that all who read his farewell note hit their "r"eply key and send Johann a note full of all the things he's going to miss about America. (I know, but try anyway...) Then maybe he will decide to stay.
