- To those using FONTastic with Mac+ (or Mac+ ROM) systems, note carefully that they disclaim the ability to move fonts into the system file, as the program does not handle FOND resources. I have found that this limitation applies even if editing a font already IN the system file and storing a new version of it (for example, creating a double size font). The FOND resource is not extended to cover the new font size. Also, if editing a font in the system file, the font may become corrupted! Typically, the bottom portion of certain characters may disappear when the system displays that character, even though the FONTastic editing window (and amazingly enough ResEdit editing window) both show those pixels there. Editing other unrelated characters may change the appearance of the "bad" ones. It may not, too. It seems that with the new ROMS that the ONLY safe method of operation is to edit fonts in separate files, and to use Apple's Font/DA Mover to move the font into the separate file for editing, and to move it back into the system file for use. Beware! Altsys has noted that Apple has recommended that FONTastic not have the capability to move fonts into and out of the system file. Apple prefers that people use the Font/DA Mover for this. Therefore Altsys is considering dropping this capability. From what I have seen, the new ROMs have made the capability inoperative anyway. -Brian Diehm Tektronix, Inc.
