[net.micro.mac] Real music editors...

chow@gvax.cs.cornell.edu (Christopher Chow) (06/11/86)

Does anyone know of a piece of software which is an intelligent music
notation editor. I need something which can edit piano/organ music as well
as orchestral pieces.

My requirements are:
1. The program must be able to deal with the variety of notation which is
found in piano music. By this I means things such as rolled chords,
implied triplets, measures with more notes which would normally fit in
a measure, grace notes, trills, multiple tracks, tremolos, etc.

Basicly, the program must be able to handle notation which is found in
    a Beethoven piano sonata.

2. The program should have some understanding of music notation, so that it
can warn about mistakes in scoring, such as malformed measured. It
however, must handle the certain cases when you intend for the measure
    to be malformed.

3. The program should also allow you to do some of the more gruesome tasks
such as transposition of a section, or the entire piece.

4. Playback is not necessary, although it would be a plus.

So far, I've seen the following programs:

Musicworks -\
              ||=== far too primitive. (can't even beam notes...)
Concertware+ -/

Deluxe Music Construction Set - Somewhat nice, but still unable to handle all
	the notation which I need.

Professional Composer - seems to handle orchestral scores okay, but also seems
to lack some of the thing I need. Does not seem suited for editing
of piano pieces, very slow, and far too expensive.

Any suggestions?
