[net.misc] PROJECT HELP: A rebuttal

steve (12/13/82)

I am afraid that you folks misunderstood what I found offensive.

I think that the concept of PROJECT HELP is a good one, and do not
object to it at all.

PP&L, however, presents it as a big corporate giveaway on their part,
whereas actually it saves them money. I do not object to the result,
I object to their hypocritic altruism.

One person wrote me a letter asking where I thought the money came from
if it did not come from PROJECT HELP. I KNOW where the money comes from.
PP&L is a publicly controlled monopoly, so their profitability is
guaranteed by law. The expense of supplying power to the poor, the
less fortunate or the deadbeat is borne by raising rates for everyone
else who buys power from them.

What I object to is them trumpetting about how they are going to match
dollars received one-for-one (boy aren't they neat) when actually they
are just giving the money to themselves, and receiving additional money
from generous people in the community.
