[net.micro.mac] Getting at Laserprep

mkb@rover.ri.cmu.edu (Mike Blackwell) (06/09/86)

Since posting the original article, I have realized that the command-K trick
to get both the Laser Prep and the document description only works with
LaserWriter/Laser Prep version 3.0 (and presumably later). Also, I'm using
System 3.1.1, but I don't think that matters. Sorry about that - I didn't
realize that 3.0 was not standard with the latest system release...
Command-F still works for just getting the document description in all
systems.

For those not using the new LaserWriter/Laser Prep, here's what I've noticed
about it (we use it on an old LaserWriter, not a Plus):

Several bugs in the smoothing algorithm have been fixed (but not all) -
Printing smoothed bitmaps (especially scaled ones) sometimes caused the LW
to crash, but not any more. Also doesn't clip the the edges of the bitmap
too far.

Supports all of the new LW+ functions, including A4 paper size, packed
arrays in PostScript, paper prefeed, and the built in fonts.

Supports automatic downloadable fonts.

Seems to print a little faster (but I could be imagining it).

Supports inclusion of raw PostScript from within any Mac document (like from
MacWrite) using a "special" font - see the latest MacTutor for a really neat
article on this (I haven't tried it yet).

You should be able to get the new Laser stuff from any dealer - it comes on
the Printer Installer, for sure.

Thanks to all who responded re: getting at the Laserprep file. The
bottom line is that a) pretending you have AppleTalk connected, b) choosing
the Laserwriter and c) using cmd-K at the Laserwriter dialog box definitely
works, BUT only with the newest System folder files (3.1, 3.2), not 3.0.

Procedures that don't work with "standard" versions of the System files
are going to be ongoing problems with so many versions. We can all try
and reduce this problem by posting version numbers of the System, Finder,
etc. you happen to be using for a new whiz-bang effect...

Anyway, at last I'm the proud owner of the Laserprep 3.1 text. Yeehaa!
Thanks again, especially to those who mailed suggestions...
