Background: On January 6, 1986, I sent John Mitchell a check for $30 in order to become a registered FEdit user and receive the current version. My check was cashed on January 14. I never received any other acknowledgment. Since then, a number of net.micro.mac readers have complained of similar problems. News: I spoke to John Mitchell by phone last Friday afternoon (June 27). He asserted the following: 1. He does not cash anyone's check until shortly before shipping. 2. He does not believe that he has failed to ship FEdit to anyone who has paid for it. 3. He refrained from cashing any checks received in the last couple of months because FEdit Plus was nearly ready. He recently deposited the backlog and sent FEdit Plus (normally $40) to those people who had paid $30 for FEdit. 4. He *cannot* receive certified mail at the address given in the title screen because it is a *private* (not USPS) postal box. The company that rents the boxes refuses to sign for anything. 5. He is unaware of anything said in this forum (or any similar one) because he's not on Usenet, Delphi, Compuserve, or what-have-you. With regard to my case, he checked his records. He believes that he sent me the then-current version of FEdit in mid-January. Since I did not receive it, he volunteered to send me FEdit Plus. Commentary: Most of the people complaining about not receiving FEdit seem to have ordered it about the same time. Two likely possibilities are: 1. That Mitchell made some clerical error, and failed to send a batch which he thought he had; or 2. That he did ship them, and they were lost/destroyed somewhere early on by the shipper. Whatever the problem was, it was unfortunately compounded by his inability to receive any kind of mail that has to be signed for. So, if you're still waiting for FEdit and you ordered in January, send Mitchell an ordinary first-class letter with a copy of your cancelled check. If you're still waiting for FEdit and you ordered within the last two months or so, there's probably a copy of FEdit Plus on its way to you. Ephraim Vishniac decvax!wanginst!wang!ephraim

Can us ordinary types (i.e those who haven't ordered Fedit) order Fedit Plus? What's the mailing address? Is it shareware or commercial? by the way, has anyone had similar problems ordering RedRyder? What's a rough estimate on time from order to receipt of the program? (I am in Toronto, Scott Watson is in St. Louis). I have been waiting almost 4 weeks for RR. Is this unusual, or am I just impatient? -- ---- University of Toronto Computing Services Warren Bell UUCP: {cbosgd,ihnp4,utai,utcsri,utzoo}!utcs!wbell BITNET: wbell at utoronto
