[net.micro.mac] Followup and comment on Dvorak's column

chuq@sun.uucp (Chuq Von Rospach) (07/04/86)

I just wanted to make one followup on my recent posting discussing John
Dvorak's column. An unnamed source in Apple dropped me a line to point out
that the column had LESS correct information than usual. Now, it is up to
you to decide if Dvorak is wrong, Apple is lying, or I'm making up the
letter from Apple to muddle the waters further.... Have fun...

Seriously, my personal feeling about Dvorak is that he has given me a new
perspective on Jerry Pournelle. For all that I disagree with Pournelle on
things, he does a good job at what he does. Dvorak belongs in the National
Enquirer, and like all psychics, his previous years predictions should be
reviewed and any year he has less than a 50% hit rate he should be taken out
and shot. As a comment from someone in the same general market as the
'apollo-buster' it seems to me that a gray scale machine being aimed at
CAD/CAM is a silly thing -- Apple, I'm sure, knows better. CAD/CAM uses
color or monochrome machines. Gray scale is a market used mostly in high
resolution text and image processing. I don't know if Dvorak was making it
up as he went along or didn't know enough to realize he was being shammed,
but it was pretty obvious to me that the apollo-buster was sort of a blue
sky machine. We'll see.

Frankly, I could have written a more accurate column than that. I found it
amusing rather than informative, which I guess I didn't make clear.

Dessert is probably the most important stage of the meal, since it will be
the last thing your guests remember before they pass out all over the table.
