[net.micro.mac] New ROMS & Old Keyboard & Keypad

leeke@cascade.UUCP (06/27/86)

I have a vanilla 512k Mac (Apple upgrade from 128k) and would like to
find out whether the new ROM/drive upgrade is compatible with the old
keyboard AND the keypad. I have heard that is was NOT, and since the
800k drive and new ROMS are on my wish list I would like to get the
store straight. Any one from Apple care to comment?

Thanks,

Steve Leeke

I have a 512K with the external keypad and the ROM/800k drive upgrade.

I have never encountered a problem. But a report here on the net says
that there is a bug, Apple has acknowledged it (the reporter says),
and has no intention of fixing it.

Description of bug:

If the first key you type (after?, during) reboot is on the regular keyboard
OK.

If it is on the keypad, the key goes into auto repeat forever, reboot
necessary.

I can't say if this is true or false, I don't think this particular
sequence is something I do.

My advice, for what it is worth:

"Don't worry about this bug too much. If there is such a bug
you can easily modify your habits to avoid the circumstances."

I use my Mac daily, lately with:

128K ROM
System 3.2
Finder 5.3
MacTerminal (To CMS thru 7171, see I do use the keypad)

Previously with:
128K ROM
System 3.1
Finder 5.2
MacTerminal

I love my 128K ROM/800K Disk (Much faster)!!!!

It may be stupid, it may be safe, but it's not Fascist!
Stretch it a little, stretch it a lot,
get your little rubber definitions here!

How can you end the discussion that way?

To answer in your vein:

MY KEYPAD WORKS FINE WITH MY 128k ROMS!

I think someone is going to have to be a little bit more informative than
saying "Apple agree's that there is a problem." before I will believe that
the problem is universal for all keypads, and Macs.

Has anyone checked to see if there is more than one version of the keypad?
Has anyone checked to see if the situation is a little more complex, i.e.
(if 128k ROM && if keypad && if some init's) pow
or
(if 128k ROM && if version 1 keypad) pow
or
(if 128k ROM && if keypad && if !some init's) pow
or
(if 128k ROM && if keypad && if >512k RAM) pow

I am the happy owner of a Mac with keypad and 128k ROM. I have been using it
extensively ever since the upgrade. I use the keypad. I have version 3 ROMS.
I have 512k RAM. I have system 3.2, finder 5.3. I had no problem while
I was still using system 3.1 and finder 5.2.

So I for one do not see the discussion as closed. I for one do not think
Mr. Hunt has the right to close the discussion. Mr. Hunt is welcome to
come look at my Mac working just fine with the 128k ROMS and keypad if
he believes that the 128k ROM and keypad are incompatible.

Once and for all: I like my Macintosh
