I don't know for certain the origins of Macintalk (so take the following with a pound of salt)....... I have played with it using Experlisp, and it's quite neat. I also had to look at a Votrax speech synthesizer for the //. Low and behold, they make the same sort of mistakes on words. Knowing something about rule-based speech synthesis, this leads me to believe that they contain the same rules. BTW, it doesn't strike me as such a great speech synthesizer, try for example: "The brown cow strove to hove into down town." (it's admittedly contrived). It also has trouble with "roll". But then language poses real big problems (if you want more details e-mail me, i'll be glad to bitch about my problems). bill idsardi linguist educational software products 1263 bay st. toronto 416-922-0087 utzoo!utcsri!utecfa!edusoft
