[net.micro.mac] Efs on a MacPlus

gal@nott-cs.UUCP (07/11/86)

We've recently upgraded our 512k Mac's to MacPluses and have
had problems with it.
After giving node, username and password info the Desktop is rebuilt
but when Efs tries to create the desktop for the Vax it comes up with
a dialogue box saying that the disc needs minor repairs. Clicking on OK
it tries to rebuild the desktop but still has problems. This continues in an
infinite loop.
Having turned debugging on on the efs daemon running on the vax
it appears that the daemon replies correctly to the OpenRF call from the Mac
but the Finder does not like the reply. The Finder then makes a second OpenRF
call but still fails to understand the reply.
At this point it puts up the dialogue box.

Having spent a day looking at the code and not coming up with any
solutions, I was wondering if anybody else has determined the problem
and corrected it.
Any helpful hints, patches etc., gratefully received.

	Thanks.

	Graeme

There are many problems with EFS on normal macs. I find it hard to believe
that EFS would even begin to run on the plus, or even with HFS, because it
assumes the MFS file system. That is, it doesn't know to make the FCB's
larger if HFS is active. The result is that the first FCB would be too
small, the second would overwrite the tail of the first, etc. Since the
first file is the system, the second is the Finder, etc., there is no way it
could work as is.

We at rice are rewriting EFS to work with HFS (still mounting MFS volumes)
and to work better in general. We shall keep the net posted, but it should
be ready in about another month, fer sure.

If EFS is what I think it is (using a VAX to act as a File Server for the
mac) , how can I get this for our installation ? I am not really concerned
about the bugs, as long as there is the potential for getting at the source
code too!
We have a few macs, and they could stand hooking up to the VAX to perhaps
use the solitary laserwriter we have there....

THANKS!
