I was just peeking in Inside Mac and saw the disk speed sound interface diagram. According to what I've heard the new 800k drives have their own speed adjustments so they don't need the mac to regulate it. Well the speed regulation is part of the sound generation, they are a stream of 16bit values 8 bits for disk speed 8 bits for sound. So my question is what is involved in making a stereo mac? Am I wrong in some my observations? I really don't know hardware but it seems like everything you need is there. -- Lance Keashly New Media Technologies Ltd. ..decvax!microsoft!ubc-vision!winston!keashly ..ihnp4!alberta!ubc-vision!winston!keashly #108 4664 Lougheed Highway Burnaby, B.C., Canada, V5C 5T5 (604) 291-7111

When one of the Apple people was speaking here, he said something to the effect that at one time the Mac was going to have stereo sound; however, when they switched from the 5.25" Twiggy drives to the 3.5" Sony drives, they needed a speed control -- hence the loss of the second channel. I'd be surprised to see a stereo MacPlus anytime soon -- the current MacPlus does have the ability to use the old 400K external drives, and Apple would have to take that away to get the second channel. Of course, once the open Mac appears, a number of multi-channel music cards may come out (remember all the ones that appeared for the Apple ][?) -- Thomas Newton
