[net.micro.mac] QD ovals

I've noticed that Quickdraw ovals are sometimes strange-- often there are
"clumps" of pixels that seem too dense, and even more strange are complete
breaks in ovals (I've only noticed these breaks in ovals of high eccentricity).
I don't think that these ovals are generated by a Bressenham-like algorithm, 
mainly because of the breaks.  Does anyone know the algorithm that is used?
Any references?  Is a non-standard algorithm being used to save space in ROM,
and/or is it a fast algorithm?
