[net.micro.mac] MacPlus Memory Chips

This may be a silly question (I know nothing about electronics) but:

I just noticed in an Apple ad that the SIMM boards for a MacPlus have
nine (9) chips per board.  It seems to me that 32 256k bit chips equal
one megabyte, not 36 chips.  What is the extra chip (per board) for?
