[net.micro.mac] HELP: Tecmar disk/Mac+ ROMs

karl@iuvax.UUCP (Karl Ottenstein) (10/01/86)

I am posting this call for help for a friend who has lost his netnews feed.
He has upgraded his Mac with MacPlus ROMs and has a problem with booting
his Tecmar hard disk now:

> .... My Tecmar

> new ROMS. Then I thought what-the-xxx, I'll try to get the Tecmar repaired.

RE: the Tecmar boot disk is incompatible
with the new ROMS. I remember seeing stuff on the network awhile ago ...

1) have you tried booting while holding the mouse down? (or is it the option
key?) to boot to the floppy ...
on the other hand, I don't recall a problem when booting ...

2) have you tried your Tecmar on someone else's old Mac?

3) you don't mention what repairs were made (nor the cost and who did it ..(-:)
but are you sure you have a properly formatted drive inside?

In general, you have to make your Tecmar your System-drive (do I remember this
right? has it been that long already?) And you have to install the Micah-mount
DAs there.

The resources you need to use your Tecmar are:

DRVR	-20	.TDISK	driver
FIXX which contains 2: -20 and -21
ICN#	555 the Tecmar icon
STR	-555 I don't recall
INIT	-31 which you have to renumber in order not to clash
			with Apple's 31. best a number higher than 31,
for a reason that escapes me now (look at the time of
			my posting).

-------------------------------------------------------
if the drive is broken in a Tecmar you can replace it with some other brand
(any other) which isn't very expensive but likely to be better.
Don't forget to create Volumes and clean up fragmentation every so often.
makes a GREAT difference.

if the logic is given you trouble, find another broken Tecmar and see if
component swapping gets you one working and one broken one.

Yes, you can hack the Tecmar into a SCSI-drive ...

PS: has anyone heard if Tecmar is still in business? does anyone know a
	phone-number that they still answer?

PSPS: sure I'll send you a disk if you still need one ...
