[Eat this line eater, if you still exist]
Lets travel back in time to the good'ole days of slow ROM, 16K
chip memory, and disk access in 10Mb chunks. When boys were boys
and Macintosh was XLisa.
I am the PROUD (not that proud) owner of a Macintosh XL running Macworks
3.0 that I picked up from a friend for a song (gold record stuff). The
machine has lots of out of date software and no manuals; but all seems to work
just fine. What I am looking for are any and all hints, suggestions (please
don't suggest a Mac+), literary references, software to make things faster,
hardware to make things prettier, or anything else that might make my XL work
'just as good as the real thing'.
Problems:
- Sound is bad on a XL! Crash or hang on most programs with digitized
sound. Am I destined to run deaf software only?
- Speed (or lack there of) of disk access is very slow with 6+ Mb on
disk. Anything I can do to speed the disk (MockHFS, faster drive)?
Tried SuperCharger with limited success (20% increase in application
start-up).
- Is there really a Pixel fix? Is it worth getting?
Requests:
- Any suggested titles for XL documentation; hardware and Macworks?
- Any papers, diagrams, or XL stuff that might be laying around
not being used? Postage Guaranteed!
Offer:
- Any educational institutions, research groups, or such interested
in donation of 1983 Lisa software (new in box) on 5 1/4" floppy.
Titles include: LisaProject, LisaWrite, LisaGraph, LisaCalc and
LisaList. Please do not request unless you can use it. You pay
postage.
- Many thanks for all information, good or bad.
- Reply via E-mail so as not to bore all the owners of slick new Mac+
and I will summarize to the net (if anybody else needs this info).
