Here's a survey of hard disk prices. Those with a page number were taken from ads in the November 1986 issue of Macworld. Some of these are manufacturers' prices, while others are mail order prices. Those with page number "CW" came from ComputerWare's 8/27/86 price list. This Autumn the prices on 20 meg hard disks continue to Fall. The price leader seems to be the Jasmine 20, only $599! According to their half-page ad, the Jasmine includes: 1 year replacement warranty 30 day money back guarantee electronic surge protector 100's of free public domain programs free shipping 4% prepaid cash discount Likewise for 30 meg drives. Check out Warp Nine's Photon 30, for only $795. 90 day factory warranty. 1 year warranty extra. 30 day money back guarantee Page Manufacturer Model Price Notes 79 Paradise Mac 10 $399 Serial? 197 Jasmine Direct Drive 20 $599 SCSI 79 LoDown 10 $649 73 Corvus 5.5MB $675 Serial? 22 Warp Nine Photon 20 $695 73 Paradise 10MB $725 Serial? 79 SuperMac Dataframe 20 $729 73 Paradise 20MB $745 Serial? 42 PCPC MacBottom 20 $749 Serial 208 CMC Computer HardMAC+20 $795 22 Warp Nine Warp 20 $795 Internal, for Mac512K 22 Warp Nine Photon 30 $795 77 Peak Systems Plus-20 $799 CW Supermac Tech Dataframe 20 $830 77 Peripheral Land PL 20 $839 CW LoDOWN 20 $840 22 Warp Nine Warp 20 $849 Internal, for MacPlus 77 PCPC MacBottom 20 $869 79 PCPC MacBottom 20 $879 Serial 77 LoDOWN 20 $889 77 MDIdeas HD20 $899 77 Peachtree Tech S20+ $899 77 MICAH 30MB $929 External 98 Mirror Tech 20x $939 42 PCPC MacBottom 20 $949 77 Peak Systems Plus-30 $969 77 Trimar Generic 20 $979 157 Corvus 5.5MB Omnidrive $979 ? 40,77 MagNet 30x $995 73 Techmar 5MB Removable $999 Serial? 73 Techmar 10MB Mac Drive $999 Serial? 73 Iomega Bernoulli 5 $999 Serial? 77 MagNet 20 $1095 Internal 98 Mirror Tech 30x $1095 77 Peripheral Land PL 30 $1099 CW MICAH 20AT $1120 Kit CW MDIdeas HD 20 $1140 77 MICAH AT20 $1159 Internal CW MICAH 20AT $1170 Installed 208 CMC Computer HardMAC+40 $1295 Twin 20 MB 77 MDIdeas HD30 $1299 77 Peak Systems Plus-45 $1299 157 Iomega 5MG $1350 157 Corvus 11.1M Omnidrive $1379 ? 77 LoDOWN 20/20 Combo $1439 20M+20M Tape 22 Warp Nine Photon 2001 $1495 20M Tape 42 Iomega Bernoulli 10 $1495 77 Univation 30 $1529 77 LoDOWN 40 $1699 77 Peak Systems Sierra $1719 20M+40M Tape 77 Peripheral Land MacStor10 $1739 10MB Removable cartridge 77 Univation 1-10 $1749 Removable 73 Iomega Bernoulli 10 $1800 77 Peak Systems Sierra XL $1859 30M+40M Tape 77 Iomega Bernoulli 2-10 $1869 (same as 10+10?) 42 Iomega Bernoulli 20 $1895 77 AST Research AST-2000 $1959 20MB+20MB Tape 157 Corvus 21.6M Omnidrive $1959 ? 98 Iomega Bernoulli 10+10 $1995 42 Iomega Bernoulli 10+10 $2095 77 Univation 40 $2169 CW AST Research 2000 $2195 77 Univation 20+10 $2359 20M+10M Removable or 40M Tape 77 Iomega Bernoulli 2210 $2399 (same as 20+20?) 77 MagNet 40/40 $2595 40M+40M Tape 98 Iomega Bernoulli 20+20 $2595 77 Univation 30+10 $2649 30M+10M Removable or 40M Tape 42 Iomega Bernoulli 20+20 $2695 77 Univation 2-10 $2749 Removable 77 Univation 40+10 $3149 40M+10M Removable or 40M Tape 77 LoDOWN 80 $3399 157 Corvus 45.1M Omnidrive $3399 ? >Notes: > > The Bernoulli Box isn't really a hard disk, is it? The Bernoulli Box uses X Meg removable cartridges. Thus, a 20+20 is a BB with two 20Meg cartridge drives. The cartridges have the same or faster access time than most hard disks. 20Meg cartridges costs about $50 each (but hell, it's 20Meg!). Systems range from 5Meg drives to 20Meg drives and NO, you cannot put 20Meg cartridges in 5Meg drives. The highest-end Bernoulli Box so far is one with an 80Meg Hard Drive and two 20Meg cartridge drives (however, this may not be available for the MAC). -Matt
