[net.micro.mac] Net.micro.mac officially slated for destruction

joel@gould9.UUCP (Joel West) (10/28/86)

There had been rumors, and now it's confirmed. Net.micro.mac has
been slated for elimination by the powers that be, along with
net.sources.mac.

This is based on the belief by the p-t-b that moderation will be used
for high-volume newsgroups, without any regard to the benefits
of an unmoderated group (e.g., efficient propagation, fast turn-arounds).

Please find the article below in net.news.adm, and then send your
opinion to the author and ihnp4!gould9!mac-poll (NOT TO ME!). Thank you.

    Final Renaming Scheme

	    Top level groups:
		    comp (Computers)
		    sci (Science and Technology)
		    rec (Recreation)
		    news (Usenet itself)
		    soc (Society and Social topics)
		    talk (High Volume Discussions)
		    misc (Miscellaneous)

Group names in capital letters are moderated.
The mod.* migration will take place well after the major migration,
	    and is not final.

    New Name: Old Name:
...
    COMP.SYS.MAC mod.mac
    COMP.SYS.MAC net.micro.mac
...
    COMP.SOURCES.MAC mod.mac.binaries
    COMP.SOURCES.MAC mod.mac.sources
    COMP.SOURCES.MAC net.sources.mac

One does not know how set in stone this is, but I suspect, given
the way it was presented, it was intended as a fait accompli.

The list of newsgroup names that Mark posted was old. The merging
of the two names (mod.mac and net.micro.mac) into one (comp.sys.mac)
was an oversight, which was later corrected.

Even if it was desireable to merge them, its almost certainly
technically impossible.

This is not to promise that at some later time net.micro.mac might
not need to become a moderated group - however if that's going to
happen you will be told (asked?) about it.

The current name shuffle is not proposing to do that.
