ittvax!neiman commented that nobody accepts checks without your name anymore. My local (SF) motorcycle shop takes this policy to ridiculous extremes. They will not accept a check unless it has a number greater than 200 preprinted on it. The reason this is so foolish is that you can specify to all banks what numbers to print on your checks. They don't care what the number is -- it's often useful to not have your old and new check numbers overlap when switching to a new bank. I generally start mine around 837 or so; it makes me look stable to fools, even though I'm really a flake by their standards. John Gilmore, Sun Microsystems
