[net.micro.mac] Spelling checker reviews needed

wyle@ethz.UUCP (Mitchell Wyle) (10/24/86)

We need reviews of spelling checkers for use in conjunction with
MS word and MacWrite. Special features required are:

Easily tunable dictionaries (so that we can build one in German)
Speed (should be faster than uploading to unix and using Spell)
Capable of running on a wide variety of macs and configurations

We would prefer if we could get academic discounts for site licenses,
but this feature is not a hard requirement. I personally prefer a
"batch" mode where the program builds a list of misspelled words for
which I can later search at my liesure, however the other people here
like interactive checkers.

If spelling checkers for MAC were already reviewed here, please e-mail
me some results. Vendors: Please mail me sales literature!

Why not examine October's MacUser, find the checker or checkers you think you
will like, and THEN ask for people's experience with them. Time is money.

Microsoft just announced Word 3.0 for the Mac (Yes, they went from 1.05 to 3.0
so they could claim the same vnum for IBM's and Mac's). It will have
Ready-like outlining, text around graphics, mult. colums (no editing in mult.
col. display mode, however), and a built-in spelling-checker and thesaurus.
They expect volume shipments won't be until Jan. '87, though, so if you can
wait it might be worth it.

Maybe in another year wp on the Mac will be up to the technical level it
is on the IBM's - wouldn't you like a WYSIWYG version of WordPerfect on the
Mac - indicies, toc, arbit. tables, etc? (This is in the works, I believe).
