How can I order the HFS Backup program? What is the company's name,
address, phone? How reliable has it been (the current version)?

The HFS Backup program is available from PCPC, the people who
brought you MacBottom. There phone number is 1 800 MAC BUTT.
It is the same program shipped with the MacBottom with a
modification, so that it will not need a Mac Bottom to run on.

You can order HFS Backup from 1-800-MACBUTT.

I have just received it and, 47 floppies later I have my 18 Megabytes backed up
(and feel much more comfortable).

I have had occasion to restore ONE program so far (NOT the whole disk!), and it
worked just fine. I'm not yet ready to do a full review, but so far I'm
VERY pleased and the people there (Robin, especially) is very knowledgable.

I tried to backup my brand new hard disk today -- about 15M of stuff
on it, and I was getting a little nervous. I borrowed a copy of
HDBackup from a friend with the idea that if it worked I'd buy it.

I was not impressed. It tried to initialize the first disk, and failed.
No big deal, except that it then froze the cursor. I could imagine
that happening on disk 12 of a 14 disk backup. So I bagged that.

I then dug up about 4 different PD backup programs. Only one of the
four, MacDump, could I get to work at all. And it was painfully un-mac-like,
and seemed to have no prevision for full restore... And it didn't init
diskettes at all!

-- Also --

In the process of backing up the crucial 5M by hand, I managed to get into
a situation where the finder said for several files "The file <bleah> could
not be written and was skipped" and then said "The directory of <bleah, the
floppy> is full." Directory full?? On an HFS Disk? None of the folders
had more than 20 files in them. And I thought the whole point of HFS was
that each folder had its own directory! The finder exhibited the same
behavior with two different floppies, so it wasn't the floppies' fault...

-- Questions --

What backup schemes have people had good luck with? Should I just
go with HDBackup and format all my disks before I start the backup?
Is there good PD software available?

What's up with HFS directories?

Thanks In Advance for any answers...

P.S. -- I recommend that you reply by e-mail, and I will summarize to
the net (which goes without saying, of course :-)
