[net.music] Bill Evans, the saxophonist

brandx@ihu1m.UUCP (Howard D. Weisberg) (12/10/84)

Bill Evans has certainly become a very in-demand musician in
the past 2 years. (By the way, does anyone know what happenned
to Mike Stern?) Bill has appeared on record with Mark Egan and
Danny Gottlieb's group, Elements, on their 2 albums.
Besides putting out his own record on Elektra/Musician, Bill has
appeared on Ron Carter's album "Etude" on the same label.

Currently, Bill has been playing with John McLaughlin in Mahavishnu.
Bill really gets a fair share of the show with John (John doesn't
cut people off, like Miles does). His playing has never been better.
Keep your ears open for this guy... This guy plays a wicked
soprano sax. When I saw Mahavishnu, the guy played an Indian-inspired
piece that blew me away.

He's also a fine composer. He contributed "Clarendon Hills" to the
Mahavishnu album (Clarendon Hills is the snobbish Chicago suburb where
Bill was born), and his solo album shows more maturity than one would
expect from someone his age.
