[mod.sources] mod.sources Archive access and Index

sources-request@panda.UUCP (10/16/85)

Mod.sources: Volume 3, Issue 26
Submitted by: jpn (John P. Nelson)

I have been reminded that USENET has a transient population with a large
turnover each year. Therefore I will be posting the mod.sources archive
index more often.

Unfortunately, archive access is NOT automated currently. I am working on
getting multiple sites to maintain the mod.sources archive (~ 4-5 meg), but
this is not yet ready.

I used to have a mechanism for uucp access to the archive, but I am at a
new site now, and this is no longer possible. I am hoping that some of the
new archive sites will be able to provide this service.

Archive access in Australia is provided by Robert Elz (seismo!munnari!kre),
contact him for more details.

Retrieval of just a few modules in the Archives is possible by sending me uucp
mail - I will uucp mail them back to you. If multiple modules are requested,
then I usually request a 9 track tape along with a self-addressed stamped
mailer, (along with a note explaining which sources are being requested) and
I will put the sources onto the tape in 1600bpi "tar" format. I am willing
to consider alternative methods.

Note that I sometimes get backlogged, but if you send mail to me, and don't
get a reply in a reasonable time (two weeks?) then you can assume that either
I never recieved your note, or my reply got eaten. (uucp mail is notoriously
unreliable!) Also, if you expect a reply via uucp mail, PLEASE include a
return address starting at some well known site - especially if you are on
some local network that uses unusual addressing conventions. More than once
I have not been able to reply (and the apparent source sitename was not
in the uucp map!)

Archive access requests should be directed to:

 {linus,decvax,mit-eddie}!genrad!panda!sources-request
 seismo!harvard!wjh12!panda!sources-request

New sources for posting to mod.sources should be sent to panda!sources.
mail to my old address (genrad!sources) continues to reach me at panda.

Tapes can be sent to:

Mod.sources: Volume 3, Issue 62
Submitted by: jpn (John P. Nelson - mod.sources moderator)

This is the table of contents for the mod.sources archive as of 12/15/85.

This time I am happy to announce several alternate archive sites. Please
attempt to contact one of these before contacting me for archive retreival -
then I can concentrate on the moderation aspect.

1. Robert Elz (seismo!munnari!kre), provides archive access in Australia
    contact him for more details.

2. Rick Adams (rick@seismo) provides archive access to those on the ARPA
net. Access is available directly via ftp (8pm to 8am EST only!!!!!!)
Log in as user anonymous, cd to sources/mod and transfer LOGFILE to
get a list of what's available and what its name is.

3. Ron Saad (cmcl2!ron1!ron) provides archive access to the New York
area. Ron has also set up direct uucp access. Contact him directly
    for more complete information.
    UUCP:	...{ihnp4,seismo}!{philabs,cmcl2}!ron1!ron
    MAIL:	333 Jay St. Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201

4. David Barto (sdcsvax!celerity!barto) privides access to the California
Area. David also indicated that he might be able to provide dial-up
uucp access, but I don't have the specifics. Contact David via:
    decvax-\ bang-\ ARPA: celerity!barto@sdcsvax.ARPA
    ucbvax--\ akgua-\
    ihnp4----\-sdcsvax-\-celerity!barto

There are other sites in the works, but they aren't quite ready yet. We
could really use an archive site in Europe, if someone wants to volunteer!

Remember, none of the archive people have infinite free time. If you request
part of the archive be sent via uucp mail (i.e. the archive person must be
directly involved) PLEASE restrict your request to just a few modules (note
that many sources are made up of multiple modules). Also, PLEASE provide
the archive person with a return address starting from a well known site,
especially if you are on a network, and mail goes through gateways that
may munge return addresses. Otherwise you may never recieve a reply!

I don't believe that any of the above archive sites are providing tape
archive retrieval yet, so I am still providing that. If you send a
9 track tape along with a self-addressed, stamped mailer (along with a
note explaining which sources are being requested), then I will put the
archives onto the tape in either 6250bpi or 1600bpi "tar" format (sorry, no
cpio). Note that the entire archive currently fits on one large (12 inch?)
reel of tape. Note: tapes that arrive without proper mailers/postage will
become the property of the moderator!

Note that I am still providing uucp mail archive access, so if you have
problems with one of the other sites, you can send mail to me.
Send archive requests to panda!sources-request. (full address below)

Please send new sources for posting to panda!sources. Postings are usually
processed within 24 hrs. Note that mail to my old address (genrad!sources)
continues to reach me.

Mod.sources: Volume 3, Issue 88
Submitted by: jpn (John P. Nelson - mod.sources moderator)

This is the table of contents for the mod.sources archive as of 1/13/85.

There are several active archive sites. Please attempt to contact one of
these before contacting me for archive retreival - so I can concentrate on
moderating the newsgroup.

1. Robert Elz (seismo!munnari!kre), provides archive access in Australia
    contact him for more details.

2. Rick Adams (rick@seismo) provides archive access to those on the ARPA
net. Access is available directly via ftp (7pm to 9am EST only!!!!!!)
    The files are in a directory mod.sources, then a sub-directory Volume[123].
The are named as close as possible to the names in the Index. Files that
have not been assigned a "short name" reside in the directory sources/mod

3. Ron Saad (cmcl2!ron1!ron) provides archive access to the New York
area. Ron has also set up direct uucp access. Contact him directly
    for more complete information.
    UUCP:	...{ihnp4,seismo}!{philabs,cmcl2}!ron1!ron
    MAIL:	333 Jay St. Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201

4. David Barto (sdcsvax!celerity!barto) privides access to the California
Area. David has semi-automated his archive retreival system.
People should send the 'moderators short titles' surrounded by 'BEGIN'
and 'END' on lines by themselves, followed by a return address from any
one of 'ihnp4, berkeley, akgua, sdcsvax'. Arpanet addresses are acceptable

Thus to request the 'Public domain Terminfo/Curses (needs work)',
'dynamic string package' and 'replacement for system(3)'
    the user should mail:

blah blah blah.....

BEGIN
pcurses
vstr
command
END
ihnp4!foo!bar!place!mysite!me
blah blah blah.

    You can Contact David at:

    decvax-\ bang-\ ARPA: celerity!barto@sdcsvax.ARPA
    ucbvax--\ akgua-\
    ihnp4----\-sdcsvax-\-celerity!barto

If you send a
9 track tape along with a self-addressed, stamped mailer (along with a
note explaining which sources are being requested), then I will put the
archives onto the tape in either 6250bpi or 1600bpi "tar" format (sorry, no
cpio). Note that the entire archive currently fits on one full-size
reel of tape.
