[net.misc] Jay Ward

When I held my Jay Ward Film Festival here in L.A. (about a year ago,
I guess), two of my guests of honor were June Foray and Bill Scott.
June, of course, provided 90%+ of the female voices (+ Rocky) for
Ward productions, and Bill did most of the male voices (including our
friend the Moose.)

Anyway, we all had a great time, and Bill (who also co-produced/wrote
most of the shows) was asked why J. Ward has nothing on the air
these days other than some commercials (e.g. "Captain Crunch" cereal).
He responded that the network execs thought that the type of humor
presented by the shows was "too funny". "Kids aren't going to 'get'
that...", was their typical comment. The early Ward productions almost
died from a similar attitude back in the early 60's.

J. Ward fans who find themselves out here should *definitely* visit
the Dudley Do-right emporium. Located out on Sunset Blvd., a few blocks
from the old Hollywood J. Ward studios, it is an entire store devoted
totally to J. Ward merchandise and "goodies" of all kinds.

P.S. During the period of time that I was arranging the film festival,
I had the bizarre experience of getting messages from June on my
answering machine. They would tend to start off, "Hi Lauren, this is
Rocky calling..." When you start getting phone calls from animated
characters, you *know* you're in trouble...
