This article concerns a recent article in net.social: %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% A few days ago, I attended another Afirmative Action meeting. One subject which received considerable discussion was Sexual Harassment. Discussion included some talk on the definition of this term. One female present remarked that she considered it Sexual Harassment when a man opened a door for her. Apparently it is considered demeaning of women when a man opens a door; perhaps he is suggesting by his action that a woman is not capable of opening the door herself? I was a bit surprized by this. Perhaps I'm a bit out of touch, having been brought up in the fifties, but I was taught (by schools, parents, Sunday School, etc) that opening a door for a woman was being courteous, not a necessary assistance, but a polite favor. Any comments from readers on this? %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% You bet I have a comment!!!! I think that, once again, a zealot is taking idealism to its illogically blown-completely-out-of-proportion conclusion. I would hope that the woman in question is in a minority of about one or two people. To determine the correct number of her co-sympathizers, however, I would like to conduct a survey by *MAIL* -- If you agree with the author of the article above (i.e., believe that opening the door for a woman [or ANYONE, for that matter] is just simple courtesy and in no way demeans the "opened-for-ee"), then DO NOT SEND ME ANY MAIL!!! I do not wish to be deluged with mail. If however, you think that a person opening a door for another person (particularly of a different sex) is demeaning and/or harassing in any way, plez drop me a line. I will post the results. Despite my flaming here, I am an OK guy sometimes; of course I will not use names or ridicule people who mail to me on the subject.
