The closing (or attempted closing) of the bathhouses in San Francisco has put me in the rather uncomfortable position of supporting them while never having gone or wanting to go to one. The real issue here is anonymous sex, which has always been dangerous, even without the threat of AIDS. But closing down the bathhouses isn't going to stop anonymous sex. People are simply going to go to public places, like parks. The owners of private bathhouses can at least make condoms and health information available. What's really needed is education, not only about AIDS, but also about different ways of having sex. Teach people about types of sex that don't involve exchanging bodily fluids. Teach them that sex isn't a disrespectful act that will debase you and your friends if you do it with them. No, I don't know how to go about educating every gay person out there, and I don't believe that's even possible. But this sort of education will actually change people's actions, instead of just changing where they do what they do. ---------------------------------------- Don't dream it; BE IT! ---------------------------------------- Jeff Mattson JMattson@BBNCCA 24 Westland Ave. #10 Boston, MA 02115
