[net.misc] Christian faith without belief in God

anton (01/30/83)

Some years ago a book by the title "The way of Trancendence" by
Alistair Klee was published. I have the Penguin paperback, which has as
its subtitle
"Chrisian faith without belief in God"

Seems sort of wild, and in its day it was. However, it does seem to
be a rather learned study of what many people on the net are propounding.

Now, don't argue this with me, I have read the book and integrated it into
my corpus of knowledge. Read it yourself, check the references he gives
(some of the derived arguments are a bit hairy in places, I don't
completely agree with his appraisal of Barth (who documented the
extant state in "Church Dogmatics", rather than proposed it) and of
Macquarrie, who Klee seems to idolise.

As I said, don't argue this with me. I have agreed with a number of
correspondent on the net not to dicuss religion, and when the situation
is forced on me we are no longer correpondents. No, its not me being small
minded; religion is something more than most people believe, it is a formal
study. The content of this formal study has no basis in opinions or beliefs.
Sub-branches cover "Ethics", which is a very diferent basis from what you
as a regular guy would think of as ethical behaviour.

Anyway, the book makes interesting reading. I recommend it. If you can
get to the end of it without uproar, drop me a line.

and my God, and you may well find them objectionable for
reasons that amount to prejudice. Don't ask and you
		 won't be offended.)
