Thanks to Don Chan and all the others for the info.

There's this TV preacher who appears on a religious station here in the San
Francisco Bay Area (Ch. 38), whom I have watched on occasion.  He has white
hair and is considerably paranoid, judging from his railing against the FBI
which he says is after him -- maybe you know who I'm talking about.  Anyway
-- a couple of times he seems to have switched to uttering nonsense
syllables for a short while, and then returned to regular English.  He did
it without batting and eyelid, and without making any reference to the
episode afterwards.

I assume that that is what happened, although it could be that he was
actually still speaking English and what he said just sounded like gibberish
to me...
