[net.misc] Four reasons for speaking in tongues

dyl (02/01/83)

I am a Christian and I speak in tongues through the Holy Spirit. The
process took part in three steps:
	- death (repent and die of the oldself)
	- burial (water baptism, circumcision of the heart)
	- resurrection (infilling of the Holy Spirit, start a new life)

So far, Christ has shown me the following reasons for speaking in tongues.

1) A form worship (notice you need spirit *and* truth).

John 4:24
God is a spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and
	in truth.

2) Evidence of the Holy Spirit in you (there are several more examples
    in Acts).

Acts 10:44-46
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came
on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had
come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy
Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they
heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

3) Anointed speaking. (Anointed speaking can be in ordinary language
or in tongues. Prophesy deals with the future and is given by
prophets only. Most tongues spoken for the whole church are anointed
speaking such as words of encouragement, sanctification. Very
often, more that one person would receive the interpretation. This
is to prove that the anointed speaking is indeed from God. See also
    entire Chapter 14)

1 Corinthians 14:1-4
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts,
especially the gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a
tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one
understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. But
everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening,
encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in a tongue edifies
himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Corinthians 14:22
	Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believes but for unbelievers;
prophesy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

1 Corinthians 14:27
If anyone speaks in a tongue, two - or at the most three -
should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.

4) The way to pray. (When we are first saved, we are like the original
creation - formless and void. There are attitudes, emotional
wounds, etc that God wants to change and heal. We know neither the
problems nor the priority that they should be handled. Therefore...

Romans 8:26-27
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not
know what we ought to pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes
for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who
searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the
Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

I once knew someone who spoke in tongues. At first it was jibberish,
but when we rotated the message by 13 it sounded something like:

There once was a God from Nantucket...
