[net.wanted.sources] Wanted: VMS to UNIX tape conversion program

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (02/01/85)

I have a tape, made on a VMS system, variously labelled "COPY format" and
"BACKUP format" which I need to read into my 4.2 system. From looking
at it using dd, I've been able to figure out some of it, but I need to
do better. Before I sit down with the VMS tape specs and write it
myself, does anybody already have what I need? BTW, are the VMS 'COPY'
and 'BACKUP' formats the same thing?

One of the random pieces of documentation that came with the tape says:
"9-track, 1600-bpi, IBM compatible, 80 bytes/record, 1600 records/block,
labeled". Does this really mean 128 kbyte blocks?? Other stuff says
"... standard labeled tape (label='progs') written with the VMS copy
command ..."
