The purpose of argument is not to change the beliefs of the person with whom you are arguing, but rather the beliefs of those people who are just listening. Nobody is going to change their religous beliefs because of something that somebody posts on netnews about their particular religon, but perhaps all of the people who don't really care one way or another will be impressed by your eloquence and give a bit more credit to your side if they are put into a position of making a choice.
