Atheism is not a dirty word to a rational mind.

And atheism is indeed an extreme view -- it falls on the far right end
of the scale that ranges from wrong to right.

Being rational doesn't mean not holding any beliefs, and it also
doesn't mean believing only things which have been proven true,
or even only those which are provably true.
Example: It is arguably rational to believe that Fermat's Last Theorem is
true, although it has not been proved.  Indeed, by Godel's Theorem,
it may not even be provable (in arithmetic). A rational belief in FLT
will be changed by a demonstrable counter-example;
an irrational one ("faith") might not be.
