Yet another remembering...
We wanted to name our two VAXen (Running VMS, alas and nowhere
near the USENET (Though on what we at DEC call the E-NET)) ROCKY and
BLWNKL (We were restricted to 6 letters...), we ended up with LAUREL
and HARDY. My 11/23 system at home is called BARNHOUSE because the
interference and noise it puts out could melt the polar caps. (The
name comes from a Kurt Vonnegut Jr. story called "The Barnhouse Effect",
which I read in the collection "Welcome to the Monkey House".)
There are several groups of systems on the DEC E-Net that have names
based on a common theme-
COOKIE - KERMIT - GROVER - OSCAR - ERNIE - BURT - BIGBRD
AURTHR - TRILLI - VOGON - MARVIN - ZARNI - KRIKIT - ZAPHOD - EDDIE -
ROOSTA - PREFCT - QRNPLN (Quarnpleen)
CASTOR - POLLUX
QUASAR - STAR - GALAXY - MOON - PLANET - NEBULA - METIOR
BILBO - SAURON - FRODO - GOLLUM - GAMGEE - RING - MORDOR - BLKRDR - GANDLF -
ELROND - STRIDR - ROHAN - GILGLD - SHIRE - MERRY - PIPPIN - THOREN -
SMAUG - DURIN - BALROG
DUNGON - DRAGON
TOWER - BABEL - EIFEL

REX - PRNSYS - SQUIRE - PRINCE - KNIGHT - KING - CHESS - PAUPER - PAWN -
ROOK - QUEEN - BISHOP
CAR - CDR - CONS - EVAL
Theses are not all of the groupings, and not all of the machines listed
in a grouping belong to related groups. Some of the machine names listed
are no longer in use, but they belong to the grouping.

When we start getting a lot of personal UNIX systems here in my
Laboratory, we'll probably name them after their users, for
simplicity.
