[net.wanted.sources] Wanted: Unix System V PLOT filters for anything

greg@vecpyr.UUCP (Greg Millar) (01/31/86)

It seems that a lot of people out there want/need various plot filters
for a variety of devices. A logical solution to this problem would be
to have a filter that converted plot commands to any output device.

Visual Engineering has a new technology for developing graphics
device drivers that is similiar to termcap, but much more sophisticated.
It seems that it would be nice to have a "plot" frontend that would
call our gks or vdi. The driver would be completely accessable to the
user through the Visual:GraphCap file, and thus would solve the old
problem with "I've got a 4010 emulator except it doesn't do xxx
the right way". It is a simple matter to make a new "device profile"
that is similiar to an existing one by stating the differences and then
referencing the parent profile.

Would this be something that would be useful? Of course it couldn't
be distributed free over the net, but it could be a product offering,
or an included freebee with our current distribution.

If there is sufficient demand out there, let me know and I'll make sure
this gets done very soon (it is pretty trivial).

P.S.
I will be giving a presentation at one of the technical
sessions at UNIFORUM in Anaheim (Wed Feb 5th), and also
the USENIX conference (Tuesday Feb 4th) on Visual:GraphCap
if you would like more indepth info.

Sorry, it is a /usr/group conference.
