[net.wanted.sources] I need a special shar

ptraynor@bbnccv.UUCP (Patrick Traynor) (03/18/86)

I have a system with a less than wonderful bourne shell, but it's all
I've got. When I try to unpack shar'd files, it trips over this line:

cat > $file << '_END_OF_FILE_'

The problem appears to hinge on the '<<', with my shell complaining:

line 12: Invalid redirection

Are there any shars out there that do not utilize '<<', or is this a
granite cornerstone of all shars?

Appreciative of any help...

You might play with sed to convert a shar file directly. There is an
unshar program written in C posted to net.sources long ago which reads
up shar files and converts, thereby bypassing the shell altogether.

I suspect that it will be difficult to convert the usenet population
away from using the bourne shell '<<' feature.
