I have a system with a less than wonderful bourne shell, but it's all I've got. When I try to unpack shar'd files, it trips over this line: cat > $file << '_END_OF_FILE_' The problem appears to hinge on the '<<', with my shell complaining: line 12: Invalid redirection Are there any shars out there that do not utilize '<<', or is this a granite cornerstone of all shars? Appreciative of any help... --pat traynor-- -- uucp: ...!harvard!bbnccv!bbncc7!ptraynor arpa: ptraynor@bbncc7

You might play with sed to convert a shar file directly. There is an unshar program written in C posted to net.sources long ago which reads up shar files and converts, thereby bypassing the shell altogether. I suspect that it will be difficult to convert the usenet population away from using the bourne shell '<<' feature. Dan LaLiberte liberte@b.cs.uiuc.edu liberte@uiuc.csnet ihnp4!uiucdcs!liberte
