how about: #anything which is removed automagically after three days on most systems.

CORRECTION: how about: #anything which is removed automagically after three days on most *4.xBSD* systems and other systems where people have decided to put in something in /usr/lib/crontab where anything called '#anything' is removed automagically after three days. In our case, we remove *everything* that isn't a directory in /tmp and /usr/tmp after three days (to quote Ben Franklin, "Fish and visitors stink after three days"), and remove anything that looks like it was made by mktemp after one day. i eschew the use of "foo" "bar" and other dill-beak geek dull unimaginative temporary filenames! i find it much better to use names like: ingracl-bbp.goo or dog or ignatz ==dd

For a long time I have used varients of the following names for temporary files: TRASH JUNK GARBAGE as well as the old standbys TEMP TEMPY TEMPxxxx The former set of names implies that I do not need to examine the contents of the file before removing it, and the latter reflect the fact that I seldom feel creative at a time that I need a file name quickly.

Is it true that if you begin a file name with the character # that it will automatically disappear after 3 days or so? I tried it, but I don't feel like waiting to find out....anyone know? Arwen

References: hplabsb.1359 My favorite is q.q qq.q q.qq w.w ad inf. t and t.[cfp] are usually quicky test programs. I will break my tempoary filename habits for files that are not quite so temporary, i.e. z.z is usually something that I need to look at when I get back to it. q.q and its kin are deleted by logging out. --jcz
