[net.music] Greensleeves

piatko@csd2.UUCP (12/03/84)

would anyone happen to know some of the other lyrics of
Greensleeves? all i know is what i think is the first one:

Alas, my love, you do me wrong to cast me off discourteously
For I have loved you for so long, delighting in your company.
Greensleeves was my song of joy, and Greensleeves was my delight.
Greensleeves was my heart of gold, and who but my lady Greensleeves?

if anyone knows any other words (or corrections
to these!) i'd appreciate hearing from you.

The christmas carol "What Child is this?" is an alternate lyric to
the same melody as Greensleeves.

Incidentally did you know that "Greensleeves" is a refernce to grass stains
men get while doing interesting things with their ladies in the meadow?

There is an amusing dialogue on a Weavers record (the weavers
at Carnagy Hall) where Lee asks Pete Seger, "what are the lyrics
to that song, anyway?"

	Pete repiles:

I looked it up once in Francis James Child's collection of
English Ballads. It has dozens of verses each one dumber that
the last: "I gave her this I gave her that but still she wouldst
not love me ... Greensleeves ..." (here he takes off into some
	hot banjo picking).

Although the Weavers reference my seem amusing -- they are basically
right. You should trot down to your local library, dig out a copy of
Childs and look it up. I did once and there are truly dozens of verses --
if you thumb through childs you'll find lots of other neat songs that share
that trait -- Joan Baez recorded 'Matty Groves', all 25 verses and managed
to make it not even be boring to listen to.

good luck

Of course, there is always "What Child is This" which whenever I sing
I end up falling back into the orignal Greensleaves lyrics. Still
one of my favorite song for the DX-7 whistle voice, now if I could
only have a good simulation of Lassie barking.

Two of my favorite alternate lyrics to Greensleeves :
Alas, my love, you've done me dirt
You've sewn green sleeves on my purple shirt
and worse than that, and worst of all
You made me go out and wear it....

Remember the Brothers Four version?

I met my love in a grocery shop,
Selling pickles and eggplant and bottles of pop.
She asked me to try some asparagus tips
And I fell for the smile on her ruby red lips.

Green stamps were all she gave!
Green stamps were all I took.
Green stamps were all she gave
So I pasted them all in my green stamp book!
