Hardcore punks, Led Zep fans, AND PEOPLE WHO LIKE CAPITALS A LOT are
likely to be pleased by recent events in the Heavy Metal tradition.
Like Metallica, f'rinstance. Ask any junior high school kid about
these guys..
Though their 1st album `Kill `em All' sounds more like thrash,
except with longer guitar solos, just about everything contained in
the grooves of this magnificent 50-minute document has become anthemic
to the new metallic movement. `Whiplash' and `Metal Militia' are not only
brilliantly performed, they contain a wild driving force unequalled
by anything I've heard since early hardcore.
Last week I heard Metallica's 2nd album (damn, can't remember its
name). The speed and ferocity of their delivery has been toned down,
slightly, only to be replaced by a startling sensitivity and range
of style that one never expected from the genre. I am reminded
most clearly of the creative level achieved on Led Zep I. The best,
ESPECIALLY if you think metal sucks.
