[net.math.symbolic] Symbolic algebra systems on Unix

kogeddes@watmum.UUCP (Keith O. Geddes) (02/11/85)

The Maple system, which is under active development at the University
of Waterloo, is available on Unix, DEC VMS, IBM VM/CMS, and DEC TOPS-20.
Version 3.3 is about to be released in a major distribution mode.
The university price will be Canadian $900 per year, which includes new
version releases as they become available. (That's approx. US$690.)
	Starting now, Maple is being used very extensively by large
numbers of undergraduate students at Waterloo; in particular, 400 first-year
calculus students. Despite its compactness/modularity that allows large
numbers of users on timesharing systems, the scope of Maple is in the same
class as Macsyma.
	Maple has also been ported on an experimental basis to several
Motorola 68000 based microprocessors, including Spectrix, Pixel, NCR Tower,
and PCS-Cadmus (the latter may be used for a Maple demonstration at
Eurocal '85 in Linz, Austria, April 1-3, if current plans work out).
However, we are not yet in a distribution mode for any 68000 based
microprocessors.
