Gaston Gonnet's recent article on SMP reminds me that a group (self/ ffitch/ Padget) at Bath wrote to CACM on 30th. June complaining about that article, and enclosing a reply for the ACM Forum. Unfortunately, CACM lost that letter. I now have a letter from Ashenhurst (the Forum editor) dated the 14th. October, saying "We will probably wish to publish it, along with one other letter received". Unfortunately, Ashenhurst finds that 100^3-100*100*100 is "somewhat overly technically detailed". We share Gonnet's regret that this article was published. J.H. Davenport Due to a recent massive fowarding failure this article is being reposted.
