Take a trip to Corning to see the Corning Glass Works. They have a tour of the factory, a museum and, I believe, a shop where you can buy Steuben crystal. Steuben crystal is breath-takingly expensive, but is lovely to look at and the tour is quite interesting. I don't have a map of New York handy, but Corning is much closer to Ithaca than Niagara Falls is ( < 50 miles) and the whole trip can be done quite leisurely in a day.
