To anyone who claims that *they* never lose socks, I say "Bah! Humbug!" You *think* you never lose socks. In reality, at least one sock in each load that you remove from the dryer was actually from a *previous* load. Try marking your socks for identification (red dye #2 is recommended) and see for yourself. As long as you always lose one sock and gain one sock (of the same color, and the warping effect does tend to be color sensitive) you probably wouldn't notice the difference. Hrmmmph. ---- Someone recently mentioned to me how it was amazing how quickly Usenet discussions shifted topics (e.g. streetlamps to socks to hangers, etc.) Not amazing at all! Usenet is just like a big distributed cocktail party. Only we have flaming and repetitive messages to dull the senses instead of some decent booze. --Lauren--

Lauren says Usenet is like a cocktail party, but with flaming and repetitive messages instead of "decent booze". Maybe what we need is net.bar. Typical submissions would look like: You are holding a cocktail shaker. Pour in an ounce of gin. Pour in <the right amount of> vermouth. Cover. Shake. Pour into martini glass. Drink. Ah... If you are really into it as an article writer, you can get into elaborare \\\elaborate descriptions of the sensations involved in drinking the item described. (cf. Proust) If you are really into it as an article reader, of course, you try all the recipes out. Could make reading netnews a whole new experience. -- Jerry ("I'm not a bartender, I'm a...") decvax!yale-comix!leichter leichter@yale

References: vortex.38 I have often used the phrase 'electronic cocktail party' to describe the net. I was wondering . . . Are all distributed bullentin board message systems of large size like this one? In terms of character, content, and abuse. (or is this the only one?) --jcz duke!mcnc!jcz

Yes, and just think what a net orgy would be like...

Second, unless you are licensed to kill, clear liquor drinks should be stirred and never shaken! While you all were studying hard, I got a degree in bartending... BillW
