[net.music] NEW MUSIC - Where's the recommendations?

rdz@ccice5.UUCP (Robert D. Zarcone) (12/18/84)

I guess I spoke to soon when I thanked you all for the cooperation
I knew I would get! *Somebody* out there must still buy albums.
The only mail I've received so far was from one of our own operating
units. Please help me out. Even if you know of a bad album, I
would like to be warned. I know some of you are really good at
reviews, so I hope to hear from you soon.

OK, you asked for it. My most recent interests have been in the
'Punk hardcore' and 'Industrial' music categories. Here are my
recommendations:

Hardcore:

Hypnotics - first album
Flipper - all albums
Butthole Surfers - all records
Dr. Know - 'Plug in Jesus'
Kraut - first album
CH3 - all albums
Discharge - can't remember which albums (I have several)
Wasted Youth - first album (I haven't heard their second yet)

all of these bands tend to be high-energy thrash with lots of guitar,
because that's the way I like it. List is in approximate order of
preference.

Industrial:

S.P.K. - Information Epiliptoids (? approx)

careful, S.P.K. has just gone through a MAJOR change. They now
seem to be main stream new-wave pop, and their new album sucks.
All of their older albums are great though, you can usually tell
because before the change most of the albums had photographs that
were xeroxed out of medical textbooks (operations & the like) and
the new album and E.P. looks new-wave-pop.

CHROME - Red Exposure
	     - Half Machine Lip Moves
	     - Alien Soundtracks

these guys are a S.F. group who's name is the best description of
what they're like. These three albums are overtracked collages of
music, T.V., and miscellaneous sound effects. All have percussion by
the leader, Damon Edge. Their later albums were less collaged, as they
performed them live (or at least that was the idea, I think, their
appearance at the Whiskey in L.A. was cancelled, and I didn't find
out until I was there). On the newer albums Edge does synthesizer
work, and has a stand-in on drums. Unfortunately the percussion by
Edge is what I liked best about their work. Alien soundtracks is
out of print except for a boxed set which includes several of their
older albums. (Half Machine Lip Moves may be one of them, I forget)

Test Dept.

A boxed set with 2 E.P.'s and an E.P. is all these guys have out.
Their videos are great, unfortunately you can't send for their
tape described in the boxed set, as it's only available on P.A.L.
format video. In their videos they seem to have mastered the
dress of 'proletariat', I don't know how to describe it other
than that. I've seen their videos on U.S.A. cables Night Flight
on the once-a-month Some Bizzare show.

Einsteden Neubauten (sp?)

These guys are German bizzarro-world. They use all sorts of industrial
tools as instruments. Jack-hammers, etc. All 3 albums are good. (if
you like that sort of thing as I do of course) Their closest realtive
     (musically) would be S.P.K.

Hunting Lodge - Will
If-Then-Else - Warfare

Both of these seem to be one-shot oddballs. It's a shame, because
they're both excellent. If-Then-Else is slightly more electronic
than the average(?) Industrial which tends to rely primarily on
unusual acoustic percussions. Both are from the U.S I think.

The Swans - Filth

These guys are probably in a category of their own. The record
credits bill 2 drummers, 2 bass players, and a vocalist. Highly
percussive, and with a lot of bass as you might expect. Hope they
do more, I've been anxiously awaiting a second offering. Coarse
and angry like the rest of the Industrials, that's why I'm loosely
     categorizing them here.

Well, you asked for it. I normally hate reading the 'favorite album'
messages in net.music, mainly because it looks like mainstream
tunnel-vision. Most have never heard of any of the groups suggested
here, but that's ok, most couldn't handle them anyway.
