From: gvax.chow@Cornell.ARPA (Christopher S. Chow) At Cornell we recently got MacWrite 3.17 (disk based), and I used it to type an 11 page paper last night. The new MacWrite is 13k larger, and consequently it swaps from the disk alot more than the old one. A few new features: The page number is in the elevator box, and it changes as you go from page to page when you drag the elevator box. There is a "goto page #" menu entry, which can be abbreviated to cmd-g. A option for using 6 lines/inch is also avaliable as a new box on the rulers. My initial impression of the new MacWrite was good. While typing and editing my paper I noticed that it was slower due to the swapping that was needed, but that didn't reduce editing time by a significant amount. However, when it came time to print the paper, the story was different. Printing, at least in standard resolution, is much slower than the old MacWrite. At times the printer would pause from .5 to 3 seconds. It seems that if you print a double space doculment the printer would pause every few lines for a little bit. Another thing I noticed was if you use "set page break" the printer would pause for about 3 seconds after the formfeed was completed before resuming printing. The one redeeming feature of the print function is that it now allows you to pause the printing at any point and resume it later. Chris Chow (chow@cornell-gvax.ARPA)
