From: Walter.Smith@CMU-CS-K The situation appears to be that Apple is on the Internet through CSNET-PDN. Perhaps someday we will be able to get software by FTP. My attempts to telnet and FTP so far result in timeouts or "destination unreachable". Thanks for the overwhelming response. Everyone else's host table entry looks just like ours (amazing, huh?) : NET : 192.5.58.0 : CSNET-PDN : HOST : 192.5.58.12 : APPLE.ARPA,APPLE : VAX-11/750 : UNIX : TCP/TELNET,TCP/FTP,TCP/SMTP,UDP,ICMP : - Walter Smith (wrs@cmu-cs-k.arpa or ..!seismo!cmu-cs-k!wrs)

From: Dick Edmiston <edmiston@CSNET-SH.ARPA> To clarify an earlier message, Apple is <<almost>> on the internet. They are moving from being a CSNET PhoneNet host to being a CSNET X25Net host, which indeed will give them full internet functionality. Other sites active on the info-mac list will be going through this move, too: we are now working with Dartmouth, for example. Since conversion to X25Net is happening with increasing frequency, let me describe the process a bit. We here at the CSNET CIC help coordinate all the activities required to make this come together, including internet access permissions from DARPA, assigning a CSNET PDN internet number, notifying the Arapnet NIC what the internet host table entries should be, providing the host software, sometimes even ordering the X25 line (but not in this case), and other related activities. Most such tasks have long lead times, and getting everything to come together at exactly the same time is not possible. What happened this time? The NIC host table appeared promptly (thank you), the permissions are in place, the X.25 line is in, but Apple has not yet installed the host software. If there is going to be much more delay, we will get the NIC to temporarily remove the host table entry for Apple. I am sorry if our poor timing has inconvenienced any one. Moral: coordination is hard! But in all, you are just right: having Apple up on the internet will be worth it! Dick
