From: John <Roach@RUTGERS.ARPA> Thanks to those who replied to my question on programmer's switch versus on/off... Everyone agreed that the PS was definitely the way to go. I have a suggestion for a desk accessory for someone who knows the macintosh better than I currently do. There are many of us would like to just leave our Macs on in between sessions, (power cycling is definitely hard on the machines), however we need to consider the possible screen burn in which could result. I work with Dandelions (XEROX Lisp machines) and I leave my machine on 24 hours a day. When the machine is placed in idle mode, an 'application' is run which blanks the screen except for a small bouncing icon which displays the time, etc. It would be nice to be able to do this also for the mac. Do you think it would be possible to create a desk accessory which erases the display, except possibly for a small randomly moving icon which lasts until the mouse key is clicked. During this idle time, maybe it might be also possible to do something constructive, like memory test, cpu checks, or calculating pi to the one millionth place, etc.. When I say "erases the display", I mean wiping out the entire display, including the pull down menus. If anybody feels up to this, I think many people would appreciate it. If it already exists, I would very much like a pointer to it. John. -------

From: ihnp4!amdahl!ems@uw-beaver.arpa (E. Michael Smith) For leaving the Mac on, why not just turn the brightness WAY down till the screen is black? That's what I've been doing; am I missing something? Thanks, E. Michael Smith ...!{hplabs,ihnp4,amd,nsc}!amdahl!ems
