slug (slug) n. one of land snails without a shell, a common
pest in gardens.
Maligned even by Webster's, the slug, since the dawn of
time, has been persecuted by man. This noble creature has
been beered and baited, stomped and salted, fired and fried.
But still this magnificent specimen of molluskdom persists.
He goes on his merry way, chewing and chomping, bringing joy
and laughter to all who see him, letting his friendly face
brighten up any day.
But his days may be numbered unless we can stop the ruthless
persecution of this magnificent animal. Millions of slugs
are killed each year, by a variety of cruel and dangerous
methods. From chopping in half with a garden hoe to burning
and even poisoning, the poor slug is hunted ruthlessly, even
by those who call themselves "friends of nature". If this
carnage is not stopped, our children may inherit a world
where the slug's smiling face is never seen, where the joy-
ous sound of the slug rustling through the garden is never
heard. Surely, this cannot be allowed to happen.
We, the Committee to Abolish Slug Harmers, need your support
to continue our fight against those who would deprive the
slug of its rightful place on our planet. Through contribu-
tions by ordinary people like yourselves, we are able to
support the slug in its battle to stay alive.
Our organization uses your funds to educate the the people
of the world about the magnificent slug, to lobby in
Congress to prevent anti-slug legislation, and to hold back
the rising tide of anti-slug sentiments found today in our
country. The members of our sister organization, SLUGPAX,
place their own lives on the line, laying in gardens, inter-
posing their own bodies, to prevent the killing of the slug
by those who would harm this defenseless creature.
The benefits of helping are manifold. Besides the
knowledge that you would be helping a poor, downtrodden
member of the animal kingdom, you will also receive:
o A free subscription to our newsletter, "The Slug Lover"
o A free sample of slug slime (Nature's Natural Lubricant)
o A free pass to our "Slugs of the World" Exhibit for use
when you visit our headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon (Slug
Capital of the World), and free passes for your children
to our "petting zoo"
Millions of years of evolution have given the slug its
place in the ecological chain; A place of quiet dignity,
of slow, stately grace. A place which may not exist
without your support. Won't you please help?
