[net.misc] hiccups -- "The Final Word?"

Misc. indeed! Yes, there is a nerve interaction between
the ear canal and the back of the throat. In fact, it is this
very nerve that has been electrically stimulated to stop
SEVERE cases of hiccups in some cases. My personal hiccup
cure (I know, you didn't ask, but you're getting it anyway)
makes use of this nerve interaction. The idea is to press both
earlobes firmly in toward the ear canal (so that you can feel
the pressure) while taking a few "gulps" of water. The ear pressure
tends to stimulate those nerves, and the water flowing by somehow
seems to break the hiccup cycle.

I will freely admit that this action looks bizarre and is difficult
to perform with only two hands. The recommended technique is
to get some water into your mouth, press in on the earlobes, and
then swallow while continuing the pressure.

Works EVERY time. At least for me. No kidding.
