Misc. indeed! Yes, there is a nerve interaction between the ear canal and the back of the throat. In fact, it is this very nerve that has been electrically stimulated to stop SEVERE cases of hiccups in some cases. My personal hiccup cure (I know, you didn't ask, but you're getting it anyway) makes use of this nerve interaction. The idea is to press both earlobes firmly in toward the ear canal (so that you can feel the pressure) while taking a few "gulps" of water. The ear pressure tends to stimulate those nerves, and the water flowing by somehow seems to break the hiccup cycle. I will freely admit that this action looks bizarre and is difficult to perform with only two hands. The recommended technique is to get some water into your mouth, press in on the earlobes, and then swallow while continuing the pressure. Works EVERY time. At least for me. No kidding. --Lauren--
