[fa.info-mac] Adminstrative stuff

info-mac@uw-beaver (02/07/85)

From: John Mark Agosta <INFO-MAC-REQUEST@SUMEX-AIM.ARPA>

Info-mac is planning to change to a digest format, hopefully sometime
early next week. This should remove most of the load we are placing on
the SUMEX mailer, save time for both me and the readers and put me back
on good terms with the local systems staff. Right now I believe info-mac
absorbs over half the mailer's time and makes mail exchange impossible for
anyone else for several hours after a posting.

I hope info-mac recipients can take advantage of the new format. I do
not yet have any "burster" software that would unbundle the encap-
sulated messages in the digest. If anyone can provide some I will post it.
Comments on the change are welcome to info-mac-request.

Postings of source codes done by usenet folks should take advantage of
also posting a copy directly on net.sources.mac. Anyone who does this
as a courtesy for us should mention that the source has already been
posted on net.sources so that we don't duplicate it.

I have recently decided not to post two long sets of sources, one from
a set of digitizer comparisons, the other of a set of MusicWorks
demonstrations. This was a hard choice, but I believe these are
secondary to the purposes of this bboard. There are other ways of
distributing software, and we do not want to compete with them. To
keep the info-mac project managable and focused we should not become
the general purpose macintosh distribution means. I hope you-all
understand.

Alternative ways of distributing software are to allow ftping it from
your own host, to pay to post it on Compuserve, or to mail out disks
to people who request it. As regards the last means, we can put people
in touch with commercial duplicating services and local users' groups
that can do this at very resonable cost.

Thanks for showing your interest!
