Are there any fellow aquarists on the net? I am just re-entering the hobby
after a layoff of a few years and would love to get ahold of others who
are keeping fish...

For several years I have had a 30 gallon (glass) freshwater aquarium. I recently set up a 125 gallon (plexiglass with black back) freshwater aquarium and I am amazed at the difference between the glass and plexiglass tanks. The 125 is set up for "Reverse Flow" filtration, with two outlets underneath the gravel, one outlet on the back in the upper left corner, and four inlets on the back, one in each corner. One of the best things is that there are no tubes or hoses inside the aquarium with this method of filtration. The outlets in the bottom of the aquarium are covered with filter plates and the gravel is on top of the plates. With this kind of filtration system, debris doesn't settle into the gravel since the water is blowing up through it. The aquarium is on a solid wood cabinet and has a wooden canopy on top that comes down over the waterline. The result is an incredibly QUIET aquarium; you can't even hear the air pumps! On the other hand the 30 gallon uses an outside box filter that is loud enough to wake up the dead... The under gravel filter has two tubes coming up the back that look terrible! Right now I have 25 fish in the 125 gallon aquarium: 4 Bleeding Heart Tetras 1.5" 4 Silver Dollar Tetras 1.0" 2 Tinfoil Barbs 6.0" 2 Firemouth Cichlids 3.0" 2 Gold Threespot Gouramis 3.0" 2 Gold Veil Angelfish 1.5" 2 Clown Loaches 1.5" 2 Pictus Catfish 3.5" 2 Albino Corydoras Catfish 2.5" 1 Bala Shark 5.0" 1 Gold Severum 1.5" 1 Lace Catfish 5.0" I haven't decided what fish I am going to put in the 30 gallon aquarium. I might sell it and get a 55 gallon plexiglass but that will take some time since the plexiglass aquariums are so expensive; not too mention the cost of the filtration system! For about a year I tried using live plants, without much luck. The fish (mostly the Tinfoil Barbs) kept eating/uprooting them. Well, this is long enough for now... Maybe we should continue this in net.pets (net.pets.fish ?)... Michael Edelman Computer Resource Department DS 50/454 Tektronix, Inc. P.O.
